Joining a new team and a new organization is always difficult, but it is something everyone does multiple times in their life. New address, new school, new college, new job, new promotion, and the list goes on. Anytime you join a new organization is a good time to look at the environment around you and prepare to make the best of a new experience.
Here are five tips to help you successfully come into a new organization:
Talk Less and Look More Around the New Organization. Most organization have a vast array of unspoken traditions and ways of doing business that they may or may not be aware. For example, lunch time for most people may start at 11:00 AM or it may start at 1:00 PM. Or, it may or may not be common for people to workout at lunch. By forcing yourself to be open, understanding, and observant, you get the advantage of seeing and understanding some of these important, yet unspoken traditions, of how the organization operates.
Find Another New (-er) Person to Discuss the New Organization. Finding another new person is a good way to ask questions, reinforce understanding of unwritten rules, and seek out another person who is also learning the ropes just like you. These sessions among new members should not become a complaint session. Rather, use it as a time to reinforce both of your understanding of new rules, new ways of doing things, and meeting new people.
Attend New Member Orientation. Colleges, high schools, gyms, and workplaces all have new employee or new member training sessions. Attend these sessions even if you think you have all the information. Chances are there will be more than a few things you can learn, other new people to meet and get some of your questions answered in an open atmosphere. This is also a good way to make sure that you are enrolled in benefits and other ways to make your day easier.
Be Friendly and Say Hello. Rather than wait for other people to introduce themselves, go out of your way to be friendly and to be the first person to say hello. Treat your new organization as a “small town” where everyone always says hello and good morning to everyone, even people they do not know. Being friendly, saying hello, and doing it with a smile on your face is an incredible way to make a very positive representation of yourself.
Be Open to Learn New Ways to Perform Old Tasks. Joining a new organization sometimes causes us to learn very far back in how we have completed tasks and other activities in the past. Instead of leaning on the past, lean on learning new ways and new ideas to complete old tasks. Learning a new way to do an old task can be fun as well as help you learn.
Take on the challenges of joining a new organization with a smile and a wave for the entire organization. Observing, learning new ways, being friendly, and helping others are great, simple, and immediate ways to become successful in a new organization.
