Mikel Van Cleve is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and Advice Director for USAA Bank. A native of Conway, Arkansas, Van Cleve is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Financial Planning at Texas Tech University focused on Financial Psychology within the military community. He is also a Certified Employee Benefit Specialist® and will soon complete a graduate certificate in Financial Psychology and Behavioral Finance at Creighton University.

With almost 20 years of experience in the financial services industry, Van Cleve’s daily focus is on helping families work toward and reach their financial goals. His advice has appeared in national publications from The Wall Street Journal and The Associated Press to CNBC.com and Business Insider. Prior to entering the financial services industry, Van Cleve served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Robert Steen

Robert Steen

Robert Steen is the Enterprise Advice Director for Retirement & Complex Financial Planning. In this role, he serves as the advice expert on retirement planning and management, as well as trust and estate planning. Steen also works to develop USAA’s advice points of view regarding related subjects, such as maximizing retirement savings, establishing a retirement income plan, managing financial needs during retirement, estate/trust/inheritance tax planning, charitable gifting and distribution of assets.

Previously at USAA, Steen served as a Senior Wealth Manager, where he spent more than a decade serving the needs of high net worth members, families and business owners in the areas of investments, retirement planning, tax planning, risk management, life income planning and estate/legacy planning.

Prior to joining USAA, Steen served as a Financial Consultant with AXA Advisors, and also held leadership roles in international trade and development.

Steen is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in financial planning and retirement at the American College. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and an MBA in finance from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Robert is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner. In addition, he holds the Retirement Income Certified Professional® and Chartered Advisor for Senior Living® designations.

Steen and his family have lived in Mexico, and he has traveled throughout Latin America as well as other parts of the world. He and his wife enjoy cooking, music, spending time with family and a variety of outdoor activities.

Joseph "J.J." Montanaro

Joseph "JJ" Montanaro is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM professional (CFP®). He is a native of Kansas City and earned his bachelor’s degree from the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. He also holds a Master of Science in Personal Financial Planning from Kansas State University. JJ is a member of the Financial Planning Association and a director on the USAA Military Advocacy team.

He has more than 25 years of experience in the financial services industry and joined USAA in 2002. Before entering the financial services industry, he served in the US Army for six years on active duty and in 2009 he retired as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army Reserve.
