USAA teamed up with Operation Gratitude to send care packages to deployed service members. Fans were invited to join the effort by bringing items from the nonprofit’s list of requested goods to help build care packages on the Spurs vs. Washington Wizards USAA Salute Night game on Sunday, Jan. 27.
Glenda Oakley, corporate responsibility director at USAA, was once on the receiving end of the care packages that Operation Gratitude sent to her and her troops when she served as a U.S. Army officer. Now she encourages USAA employees to give back to service members who serve us while being deployed.
“I know firsthand how these care packages can bring joy to these folks who are away from home,” said Oakley. “I had about a hundred soldiers, and Operation Gratitude answered the call. They made sure each one of my troops received a care package for the holidays. I was able to hand them out on Christmas Eve and see the joy on their faces. Some service members don’t receive a care package at all during their entire deployment so this is really awesome and a full circle moment for me.”
Service members and veterans received up to 40 percent off tickets to the game, and they watched active military members present a court-sized American flag, stretched across the floor, during the National Anthem.
The final USAA Salute Night of the season will take place March 20, as the Spurs take on the Miami Heat on Military Appreciation Night. For additional information on USAA Salute Nights, visit Spurs.com/Salute.
