USAA announced during this week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that it is collaborating with Honda and ConnectedTravel to develop a safety coaching application for the automaker’s driver program – Honda Dream Drive. Real-time coaching applications can warn drivers of potential dangerous behaviors; for example, informing the driver that they are driving too fast as they approach a sharp turn or school zone.
USAA is shifting from a repair-and-replace mindset to detect-and-prevent. The goal? To prevent members from being involved in crashes. CES attendees had the opportunity to see a live demo of the app January 8-11. The app is scheduled to be integrated into vehicles in summer 2019.
“USAA looks forward to assisting Honda in developing a safety coaching application for their Honda Dream Drive program. Our long history promoting driver safety and developing safe driving programs will enhance Honda’s in-vehicle experience,” said Randy Termeer, general manager, USAA Auto Insurance. “USAA cares deeply about roadway safety and believes that collaborations of this type can greatly increase safe driving behaviors.”
Honda is one of USAA members’ favorite brands. Two of the top 10 newly-insured USAA vehicles belong to Honda: Honda Civic (#3) and Honda Accord (#6).
The USAA-branded “driver coach” feature will include a “rewards” platform to incentivize safe-driving behavior within the app. A dashboard view of the driver’s scores across key safe-driving categories will allow the driver to drill down into specific areas to improve their driving score.
USAA has a long history of promoting driver safety and developing safe driving programs. Last year, USAA sponsored a city-wide safe driving contest in San Antonio, Texas. The three-month-long contest drew more than 14,000 contestants. Participants reduced their distracted driving by 29 percent, harsh breaking by 17 percent and speeding by 45 percent in the first month of the contest. USAA has been focused on auto safety initiatives since 1932.
Honda Dream Drive is the automotive industry’s first integrated driver and passenger infotainment, commerce, services and rewards dashboards within the vehicle environment. First shown as a concept at CES 2017, Honda Dream Drive has evolved to offer drivers and passengers a broad range of convenient services and engaging entertainment options, while minimizing the potential for driver distraction. The program is developed in collaboration with Connected Travel, a connected vehicle platform and application services company, and now USAA.
