The UCC is a 24/7/365 centralized operations center tasked with monitoring, assessing, and responding to significant local, national and global events that could potentially impact USAA employees or interrupt business.

The UCC was first established in 2011 with a handful of staff and has now grown to more than three dozen employees representing security, incident management and facilities management. The team consists of an intelligence analyst, eight critical facility technicians, 10 incident managers, including three meteorologists, and 15 security operators.

“The UCC exists to help ensure the safety of USAA employees and to facilitate operational resiliency,” said Gary McAlum, USAA senior vice president and chief security officer. “In other words, when disruptions impact our ability to serve members due to weather events, IT issues, natural disasters, cyber-attacks, whatever the case, we can get back online as quickly as possible.”

The UCC has undergone an extensive renovation, which began in September 2017, and includes a new ergonomic design that fosters collaboration and accommodates additional emergency management partners. The enhancements also include new audio-visual systems with the ability to monitor 16 separate systems simultaneously.

In the month of June alone, the UCC monitored 174 incidents and notified more than 20,000 employees of potential life safety events. Some of the types of incidents the UCC monitors and/or responds to include:

  • Severe weather (tornado warnings, ice events, etc.)
  • Events impacting USAA facilities (e.g. power outages)
  • IT system disruptions
  • Potential life safety incidents near USAA facilities or employees (fires, shootings, civil unrest)
