How to Report Card Cracking or Popping

Is someone approaching you through Craigslist™, Facebook™, Instagram™ or Twitter™, offering a “legitimate” way to make $5,000, $10,000 or more in exchange for personal information, such as your debit card number and PIN, and few hundred dollars? Don’t fall for it — it’s fraud.

 

Card cracking, also known as card popping, is a variation of the old fake check fraud. But in this new version, individuals and gangs use social media platforms such as Craigslist and Instagram to solicit USAA members’ participation, then use mobile banking applications to commit fraud.

 

The accompanying graphic shows actual examples of messages used to attract USAA members to the scams.

Beware: It’s Fraud

 

Besides losing money and risking identity theft, if you willingly participate in card cracking you may face criminal charges. Regardless of who deposits a bad check, the account holder is ultimately responsible for any money withdrawn.

 

USAA Bank will never ask for any personal or account information, including credit card numbers or PINs, in any social media platform.

 

USAA Bank will never ask a member to mail back or provide a physical debit card.

 

If you are suspicious about any social media post claiming to be from USAA Bank, please notify us immediately at abuse@usaa.com.

 

Report It

 

If you see these types of posts in social media platforms, please help us protect the organization from fraud by reporting them on the platform: Craigslist, Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

Received a spam message that says that it is USAA but has a web address of:  jentorne.net.  The message follows USAA's formatting, layout and coloring precisely.  Just have to check the sender block very carefully because it displays USAA but the expanded address shows "skruse@virchowkrause.com"

I just received an email from Caskerj1@lasalle.edu saying the following. I could tell it was spam, but other than leaving this comment, I am not sure how to report it to USAA. I hope this helps in someway so others can know also. It was delivered to my SPAM automatically, which raised my suspicions, but still email companies make mistakes too.

Received an email today titled "USAA Account Resolution Required" with official logo and website link to click: https://www.usaa.com/inet/ent_logon/Logon
However the "To" was to "Recipients" and when I clicked on Recipients it showed leyvae@duq.edu

Ok i am sorry but i personally had my online and mobile and my bank acount all froze due to idenity issues cause REPS sat there and gave info out and i have proof of it and no one is handeling it and now im not able to call in cause my id's on  all the apps dontt match what the heck  usaa im not happy at all and the reps are rude too
