Since 2012, USAA has offered the Drivesharp program free to auto-insured members age 55 and older. Drivesharp is an online brain-training program that helps drivers improve their visual processing skills and make split-second decisions on the road.
While it looks and feels like a simple computer game, it's based on sophisticated neurological research and can actually help improve the hard-wiring of the brain.
"For example, older drivers tend to get into accidents caused by a failure to yield, which indicates a lack of peripheral vision," says George Drew, assistant vice president of Loss Prevention and Safety at USAA. "Drivesharp can help drivers expand their field of vision, take in more information at once and react faster to avoid a crash."
More than 73,000 USAA members have signed up for the program to date. You can complete the 10-hour course at your own pace. The developer, PositScience, recommends training about 30 minutes at a time, three times per week. Complete the program and receive a $25 VISA® gift card from Posit Science.
"Early in the program, I became aware of how easily my mind wanders, from driving attentiveness to unreadiness," says John Bingham, a USAA member from New York. "Although Drivesharp can be humbling, it teaches attentiveness. It probably saved my life driving across Canada to Alaska this summer."
No purchase necessary to receive VISA gift card. VISA gift card giveaway ends on Sept. 25, 2014. Limited to one per member and earned only after the first completion of the Drivesharp program. Completion means user completed all ten regions of the Drivesharp training program or successfully passed the early exit assessment test. Drivesharp is a program provided by Posit Science. Benefits, if any, of completing the Drivesharp training will vary from person to person depending on your current driving skills, vision, reflexes, the amount of time spent training, and other factors. If you have any concerns about your ability to safely drive a vehicle you should consult your physician before driving.
