Amidst the fireworks and barbeques this 4th of July, we commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. If this feeling of independence inspires you during your summer PCS to also declare your unalienable rights, among them are Life, Liberty, the pursuit of Happiness and a Do-It-Yourself (DITY) move, then you have come to the right place! Many families tend to balk at those who choose to pack ALL of their belongings themselves and get them safely across the country. But, in some instances the DITY can be advantageous to your peace of mind and. if you are lucky, your wallet!

There are two types of DITY moves: a full DITY (also known as Personally Procured Move (PPM)) or a partial DITY, where you move only SOME of your belongings.

The first advantage of a DITY move is the control you have over the packing, location and well being of your belongings. If you have a special heirloom, or items that are priceless to you, moving them yourself, ensures you will not worry or fret about their location, whether they will be damaged and eliminate the possibility of them getting lost. We have done a partial DITY for all of our moves. There are certain items that the movers will NOT pack and some items I recommend you ALWAYS pack yourself (your most valuable personal (non replaceable) items, important documents and items you will . need in transition (air mattresses, clothing, paper plates, etc)).

The second MAJOR advantage of a complete DITY, is potential to earn a few dollars. You can be reimbursed up to 95 percent of what the Government's cost would have been should they have performed the move. First, you must obtain approval from your installations transportation office. They will be able to recommend some military friendly moving company, and van rentals etc. Remember, to make the most money you must move smartly and be very conscious about moving costs. Here are a few tips to save money during a PCS. Upon your arrival at your new duty station, you must submit a claim with the transportation office within 45 days of completing your move. Your claim should include "DD Form 2278, DD Form 1351-2, certified weight tickets (empty and full), PCS orders, and receipts for rental equipment, fuel, tolls and fees for weight tickets."

Whichever type of DITY move you choose, you can be successful if you just take time to prepare! So, take a break from the fireworks and flag waving this Fourth of July and get started on that packing!
