Summer is widely considered the most ideal time to move (and the most popular), but as a military family you don't often have a choice. Don't fret! A winter PCS may be an unexpected gift.

Here are three reasons to feel jolly about a winter move:

  1. You can afford more than a gingerbread house: “In winter, there are fewer properties, but there are fewer buyers per property so it's less competitive,” says Greg Jaeger, president of USAA Residential Real Estate Services Inc. The more favorable supply-demand balance can lower prices. In the winter, “negotiations are slower-paced, and there is more negotiating room,” Jaeger, a former real estate agent, says.

My spouse and I found this to be true when we purchased our home in November of 2012. We felt we had an advantage because the seller wanted to be moved and settled before Christmas, making the negotiations and closing activities move more quickly than anticipated. We were even able to finagle a lower asking price!

  2. Santa’s Elves are the best in the business: Since the demand for movers and packers is less in the winter, you have the opportunity to be more selective on pack-out dates and moving companies. Hopefully, the slower pace will mean no lost boxes, no delays in household good delivery and no HHG mishaps.

  3. It will still be the most wonderful time of the year: Your children will be able to acclimate to a new town and school during the peak of celebrations, parties and socials. This will allow them to get into a routine and make new friends before summer arrives. This is also a great opportunity to make new holiday traditions and memories. With some advanced preparation, you and your family can even make the most of Christmas on the road. When my family moved during the holiday season, it forced us to be less focused on the tangible gifts and more on the blessing of family.

It may be a bit harder to deck the halls with boughs of holly during your winter PCS-but it can still be a memorable and happy holiday season! Are you moving this winter? Please share where you are headed and how you are handling the holidays in the comments!
