If you are lucky to live somewhere where the weather is nice, you may prefer a stay-cation for any upcoming vacation plans, but if the open road is calling your name here are some nifty apps to make your time on the road all the more enjoyable!
I like Google Earth (because it has more features), but any map application will do. I also use the standard Map app in the iPhone® and Google Maps. It is best when you have a co-pilot to help you with directions, but use one with voice features if you are taking a trip by yourself. Download information: Google, MapQuest (both free)
Catch All Application
NearMe™ uses your location to find restaurants, lodging, gas stations (and more) near your current location. This is very helpful if you are looking for a place to stop while driving. (free)
Places to Eat
Finding the nearest place to eat has never been easier. I like Yelp personally because you can quickly see highlights of reviews, as well as have access to tips and full reviews from people who have been there before. I also like that the hours of operation, website and menus are readily accessible. Download information: Urbanspoon, Yelp (both free)
Tunes for the Road
No need to worry about losing the signal of your favorite radio stations. Use these applications to listen to non-stop radio. iHeartRadio allows you to continue to listen to many radio stations no matter your location (I use this one frequently because I miss Texas country music!). Pandora and Spotify allow you to create a custom radio station based on your song and genre preferences (may I suggest checking out Pandora's Cardio Dance mix for an upbeat car jam session). Download information: iHeartRadio (always free), Pandora and Spotify (have free versions)
Where to Go/Stay
My favorite feature of TripAdvisor is the "Things to do" feature. It lists previous travelers' favorite things to do, as well as reviews and links to additional information for the attractions. You can also read hotel and restaurant reviews. Download information: TripAdvisor (free)
Where to Fuel Up
This application allows you to find the cheapest gas stations by your GPS location or zip code. A free app that helps you save money - not too bad. Download information: GasBuddy (free)
