No seriously, my husband and I painted our front door red. Surprisingly, it was his idea! I teased him for a bit about how this might be an over the top way to decorate for Valentines Day, but am thrilled with the result.

After doing some door painting research I was surprised to find how many meanings painting your door red has!

  • In Scotland, homeowners would paint their front door red to signify that they had paid off their mortgage. (not this case in my house! We made our fist mortgage payment last month...)
  • According to Feng Shui, a red front door means "welcome."
  • An early American tradition, if a home had a red front door, tired travelers would know the home was a place where they would be welcomed to stop and spend the night or rest.

Many of you are thinking "so what, my door is not red", but this site has fun and interesting facts on what many other door colors say about your personality!

I thought painting the front door would be an all weekend project, but it turned out to be easier than I expected! I followed these steps from the DIY Network (except I did not take the door off of the hinges, just used painting tape to ensure no paint got where it was not supposed to!) So, for the cost of a small canister of paint, sandpaper, painting tape and a mini paint roller we have a bold and beautiful front door! I have to say it is an eye catcher and perfect for Valentines Day!
