If you are having difficulty saving, it might be because you think that you must save hundreds of dollars at once, but small amounts can add up. This technique, known as micro savings, enables you to build savings with more manageable amounts. Text Savings leverages this concept to help new savers start saving as well as experienced savers save extra.


What is Text Savings?

Text Savings uses micro savings to help build savings account balances. After a simple and quick enrollment, text savings will move anywhere from $1-$9 a few times per week based on your checking account balance. As a safeguard, the transfer will not occur if your balance drops below $100. On average, members are saving $70/month.


How much does it cost?

There is no charge to you as a USAA member. All you need is a USAA checking account, USAA savings account, and a mobile phone.


So why is it called Text Savings?

The name comes from the daily text messages that include your checking account balance as well as a light-hearted message from Tracker the dog. Also, members can text back with various commands to personalize the experience.


What’s the deal with Tracker the dog?

Tracker is the mascot behind Text Savings and is a German Shepherd inspired by the military working dog. He is relentlessly looking for manageable amounts of money to move into your savings account.


Do I have to tell Text Savings how much or when to save?

Nope, that’s all part of the simplicity of Text Savings. Text Savings does all the work for you to determine when and how much money to save and then moves the money into your savings account.


Does Text Savings work?

Since this free tool was launched in May 2017, over 65,000 members are actively using text savings and have transferred $31.5M into their savings accounts. Not to mention, members have sent over 150,000 text messages to increase how much they save.

I am stationed overseas and have a foriegn mobile #.  Although the drop-down menu system asks for a country, and seems to accept the country code in my profile, it never saves correctly in the text savings system, which seems to be US only.

Thank you for sharing your concerns, @WJF. You may call us collect at 210-498-2722, or select "Help" at and click on Calling from International. You may also reach us using Wi-Fi. Below are the instructions to complete this: 

  • Open app, select HELP found at bottom of app (if the screen appears to enter PIN, select cancel, then help)
  • Select “I want to see contact options” 
  • Select “Show USAA’s phone and contact options.” 
  • Select CALL USAA & request Website Support 
  • This should allow you to contact us on Wi-Fi and not a cell phone service

I have two savings and two checking accounts. How do I switch which account to save to?

@LtTealeaf, That's a great question. To switch accounts, please use the following.


From My USAA Page:

  1. Select My Tools
  2. Go to Budgeting and Goals
  3. Select Savings Booster.
  4. Select Get Started.
  5. Select the account settings (from which account and to which account).
  6. Select the radio button next to mobile number.
  7. Select Next.
  8. Verify the details.
  9. Select I agree.

@Ben, That didn't work. When I click Savings Booster I get this page:Savings Booster.PNG


Then, when I click on Text Savings Enrolled, then on Get Started, I get this second page:Text Savings.PNGTracker can't change which account to save to over text. It's not one of the commands he's "been trained to understand".  So, back to my original question, How do I change which account to save to for Tracker USAA?

@LtTealeaf, Sorry that didn't work. I'd try to unsubscribe to Savings Booster and then reapply with the accounts you want. - Ben

How do I see when I initially turned Tracker on for my savings account? I can see how much we've saved, but not since when.

Hi USAA team!  I love the Text Savings feature.  I'd love to use it on more than one account but I haven't figured out how to do that.  Is there a way to enable Text Savings on more than one account?  When I go to the Text Savings section of the website, it says I am already enrolled (which I am, I just want to enroll for an additional account).  Thanks!
