When it comes to coffee, I’m a late-adopter. Save for some field training exercises where my body begged for more “Ranger Pudding”, beverages of the caffeinated variety did not do it for me.
Today, a jolt of java is part of my daily routine. Nothing like a fresh, hot cup of Joe to kick start my morning!
Just two weeks ago, I heard some great advice from a guy who’s also an early riser powered by coffee. He said that a friend of his recommended he drink coffee “black” (as in straight, with no added flavorings). He said that if you can enjoy coffee in this manner, you can always enjoy it sweetened but won’t be disappointed if no sweet stuff is available.
Well, since my rise and grind workdays involve serving up coffee at home or on the road, making the best of the coffee experience is essential. I prefer flavored coffee whenever possible and thought it might be fun to share some of these coffee concoctions with you. (And, secretly hope that you’ll share some of your coffee recipes below, so we can continue the coffee crusade!)
The focus of these coffee recipes is on the flavoring. I created these mixes by accident, experimentation, and by curiosity. First things first, you’ll need to get your choice of coffee and prepare it. Whether you choose to use ground coffee, a coffee press, or instant coffee, these flavor combinations will work in any type of neutral, unflavored coffee.
“The Pratt Original”
The Pratt Original is something I stumbled upon on morning when I accidentally added the wrong coffee creamer to the morning cup. My wife and I took the first sip and were hooked – I actually made some this morning!
1 TBS Hazelnut Creamer
1 TBS Irish Cream Creamer (the non-alcoholic variety)
A pinch of Cinnamon (I use 2 types; Saigon Cinnamon and either regular ground Cinnamon or a Cinnamon stick. Adjust to taste.)
A pinch of Cardamom (This spice can be found in any grocery store and a little goes a long way.)
Sugar In The Raw (Sweeten to taste. I prefer this type of sugar due to what I’ve read about many of those sugar-free options out there.)
“CMH” which stands for Caramel Macchiato Hazelnut
To me, something magical happens when you combine Caramel Macchiato with Hazelnut. If you like Caramel Macchiato and wish to change things up a bit, try this combination.
1 TBS Caramel Macchiato Creamer
1 TBS Hazelnut Creamer
A pinch of Cardamom
And finally, here’s one of our favorites that not only tastes great the initials remind me of a military acronym!
“AFV” Amaretto French Vanilla
Although you might have anticipated AFV to stand for Armored Fighting Vehicle, this hot coffee combination might prepare you for the fighting the good fight at the start of your workday! (Be advised, just like Irish Cream mentioned above, you’ll want to use the non-alcoholic version of both that and Amaretto if you’re headed to work.)
1 TBS Amaretto Creamer or Syrup
1 TBS French Vanilla Creamer
A pinch of Cardamom is optional.
So, there you have it! Three coffee flavor combinations to try.
I’m no Barista, but family and friends who have tried these combinations said they enjoyed them. Maybe it was because they were guests at our home and didn’t wish to be impolite? Who knows?
Either way, like these or not, please share your coffee concoctions below!
As a Veteran that learned how to make Ranger Pudding from others that served, why not take a break from the day-to-day challenges and enjoy a new twist on coffee flavors?
Up the cups!
