We've been in our new house in Texas for a week (seriously, I am still unpacking), and I'm already hearing, "Moooooom, I'm bored!" Truth is, my girls do need some friends. We're in a neighborhood full of them, but we need to utilize our military mingling skills and force ourselves to find some new playmates. Daddy goes back to work very soon, and until we do find a social circle, I need something to keep my children busy. (Well, other than unpacking, which has bored them quite quickly.)
I'm a military spouse and I'm resourceful. Surely there are some inexpensive things to do around here, right?
Turns out, there are many military-related services available that don't just apply to those living on a military installation. Services like VetTix.org work even better when you're in a bigger city — in my case, Dallas, Tex. I headed over there to see what activities they had going on. I was able to score four tickets to the FC Dallas Major League Soccer game on the Fourth of July, complete with fireworks. Each ticket cost just $2.50 to cover the handling fee. The best part was the look of joy on my husband and daughters' faces — they're big soccer fans.
Another great free offer I have to tell you about is the 2013 Blue Star Families Blue Star Museum Program.
Blue Star Museums is a partnership among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, Joining Forces, MetLife Foundation and museums across the country. More than 2,000 art centers, museums, and exhibits are offering FREE entrance for all active duty, National Guard and Reserve military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
The program is fabulous and very easy to use. Simply visit the website and click on your state to see the participating museums. April from LovingASoldier.com had some great suggestions for your visit, too.
Of course, you can easily do an Internet search for military discounts, or decide what you want to do and then see if there is an associated military offer. Places like Sea World, for example, offer free tickets.
I hope that you, like me, can solve the "Moooooom, I'm bored" summertime problem by adding a few fun and inexpensive ideas to your entertainment lineup.
