Are you looking for a way to save for emergencies, pay off high interest debt, save for retirement or large purchases, or how to save automatically without thinking about it or seeing your money transfer? Military Saves has exactly the resources you need.

Every year Military Saves®, a component of the non-profit America Saves® and a partner in the Department of Defense’s Financial Readiness campaign focuses specifically on military families and savings goals for one week. The purpose of the week is to motivate, encourage, and support military families in their goals to save money, reduce debt, and build wealth.

The Department of Defense and many private organizations (USAA is a proud supporter) work together through social and other media outlets to encourage military families to take the Military Saves Pledge.

The pledge, which states “I will help myself by saving money, reducing debt, and building wealth over time. I will help my family and my country by encouraging other Americans to Build Wealth, Not Debt”, encourages military families to take small actions to improve their financial health. That’s what Military Saves® week is all about.

Focus on a Reachable Goal - The professionals tell us to start small and think big. USAA CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM (CFP®), Joseph Montanaro shares great advice when he says to, “focus on one reachable goal.”

“We think that it’s important for military members to create an actionable savings plan. Learning to save is the first step in avoiding debt and securing one’s future, so we’re excited to support the noble goals of Military Saves,” stated Bob Winzenried, retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. and senior vice president for Military Affairs at USAA. “At USAA, we want to help our military members achieve long-term financial security as they provide security for our nation. That’s why we’re encouraging our members and our employees to take the pledge to start saving during this year’s Military Saves campaign.”MilitarySaves.org provides military families many resources throughout the year, not just during the Military Saves campaign week. Check out their “Setting A Goal” area and choose which area for which you wish to save for suggestions on why saving for that area is important. Continue to their “Make a Plan” area for real life stories and plans designed to help turn your savings dreams into reality.

All it takes is the first step, making the commitment. Saving for anything you choose, may seem completely overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be. Remember, you eat the “elephant” one bite at a time.
