matt;

If you haven't completed this years tax filing then hopefully by now you have filed for an extension and paid any tax owed.

Visit these EXTERNAL LINKS:

1. IRS Publication 501 - Exemptions, Standard Deduction, and Filing Information

2. IRS - Extension of Time To File Your Tax Return

QUOTE FROM IRS: Please be aware that an extension of time to file your return does not grant you any extension of time to pay your tax liability.

As for filing status Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separately the choice is between you and your wife. However that said, BOTH of you must use the same filing status if you decide to use filing status of Married Filing Separately.

I hope I have helped.
