Immediately after being commissioned a 2nd LT, the Army Nurse Cpt who commissioned me told me that the next thing that I should after paying the sergeant for my first salute was to call USAA and become a member. She even gave me the phone number. I called USAA and became a member, got auto insurance and went on my way. This was in 1977 and now in 2010, I still have auto insurance as well as home owners insurance, a bank account, credit cards and other products.
