I have been a USAA member since the early 80's and have experienced a high level of service from the insurance, banking and trust units. Given the high level of service to which we were accustomed, we decided to obtain our latest mortgage through USAA....big mistake, awful experience...none of which was our fault

I would never recommend them for a home loan. Insurance is awesome, banking is ok but not the mortgage department

I have my mortgage through USAA as well. It was a freaking nightmare! I would not recommend them to anyone who wants a smooth transaction.



Insurance stinks now as well, and their rates are higher that the competitor. Read the comments and complaints online with a Google search, "USAA Complaints" and you will see they are an insurance company and not a bank. I've been with them 24 years and watched them go downhill every year.


I purchased a home in December of 2013 upon my PCS to Barksdale AFB, LA. Like everyone, I love their banking and insurance units. I used their USAA Mover's Advantage Program to find a military-friendly realtor. All was well until I worked with their Mortgage unit. I used the online message center because I was stationed at Kunsan AB, Korea and they refused to e-mail me back. They called my wife asking detailed questions and worried her. Once I got that fixed, I caught them giving me "less than accurate" information. In the end I eventually went with a local mortgage company and got exactly the same mortgage. I'm starting to feel the pain. Started with the loan processing and it's painful. I already had a bad experience back in 2001. Ended up getting a loan at another bank in 10 minutes and got a better rate. It just seems you have to jump through so many hoops to get a loan. If they want our business, why is the process so painful?

My mortgage/refiancing experience with USAA went soothly.  However, when I called to inquire about paying my loan back every two weeks versus once a month, I was told that this option was not available, nor never would be.  Counting on USAA's "watching out for the military member" reputation, I was a bit taken aback that USAA would not even try to help the military member save some monies and pay off the loan earlier.  What was even more insulting was not finding a USAA avenue to complain.
