Great question @CARJR1, thank you for reaching out to us to verify coverage for renting a vehicle from a ride-sharing company like Turo.   To answer your question, yes, there is coverage when you rent a vehicle.  The named insured and resident family members are covered persons for Liability, Medical Payments and Uinsured/Underinsured motorist coverage when operating or occupying a non-owned vehicle.   If Physical Damage Coverage is carried on any insured vehicle, that coverage extends to a vehicle borrowed or rented by the named insured or resident family member even if that vehicle is being driven by a permissive user and the insured is not in the vehicle.

The USAA auto policy generally provides the broadest coverage as is shown on the Declarations for a covered person's use of a nonowned vehicle of the following types, as long as it is not available for the regular use of the named insured or any resident family member:

  • Private passenger auto or pickup
  • Private passenger van, which includes 15-passenger vans.
  • Motor home
  • Golf cart
  • Snowmobile
  • All-terrain vehicle
  • Dune buggy
  • Moving van or box-type moving truck for personal use, such as a UHaul van or Penske truck  (Physical Damage does not extend)
  • Trailer not used in business  (For Physical Damage we will provide the broadest coverage shown in the Declarations. Liability, Medical Payments and UM/UIM extend from the towing vehicle.)
