I wasn’t going to enter the drawing that landed me in Hawaii this January.
I can’t believe I almost missed the chance to trade my daily grind in Idaho for a trip to Waikiki and the experience of a lifetime through the USAA Honor and Defend Pro Bowl Sweepstakes.
Here’s what happened.
At the end of a routine phone call with USAA, a member service representative asked if I wanted to enter a drawing to win a trip to the Pro Bowl. I’m a football fan, but I was busy so I passed.
A few days later, a brochure advertising the same sweepstakes arrived in the mail. It was the last day to enter, and on a whim, I did.
I couldn’t believe it when they told me I had won! Six days and five nights in Honolulu. Four tickets to the game featuring NFL all-stars. Invitations to all sorts of parties and special events. Not to mention a check for $13,500!
I happily swapped business suits for bikinis and traded work meetings for a chance to rub elbows with NFL players and USAA executives.
Soon, my three guests and I found ourselves settled in two lovely hotel rooms overlooking the ocean. Another friend flew over to join us from South Korea, where he was stationed, and USAA hooked him up with a ticket to the game.
We got to attend a really cool Pro Bowl practice at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, a VIP party and a tailgating event.
Fans wearing jerseys and team gear mingled with NFL stars at a street party open to locals. My friend Carlie saw one of her favorite players — Eddie Lacy of the Green Bay Packers — talking on his cellphone. When he noticed she was beaming at him, he hung up to chat with her.
The trip was full of special moments: getting my first flower lei, discovering an outstanding Italian restaurant across from our hotel, sipping drinks garnished with orchids by the pool, walking along the beach to get to the local zoo and, of course, attending the Pro Bowl. The whole experience was priceless.
Now, on dreary days back in Boise, I can relive those amazing memories of the trip I almost passed up.
You’ll have a chance to enter the Pro Bowl sweepstakes later this year. Trust me: This is a chance you don’t want to miss.
