When longtime employee Armando “Mando" A. passed away in the fall of 2021, many employees were crushed.

Mando, touched the lives of many over his 24 years at USAA, and is remembered for his passion for helping others, says Linda N., VP, real estate mortgage originations.

“Mando was someone who never met a stranger because he could  instantly connect with anyone and made people feel welcome and accepted," says Linda. “He was a servant leader and thoroughly enjoyed helping people succeed to accomplish their goals and dreams."

To celebrate Mando's life,  USAA employees created the Mando Leadership Excellence Award to recognize employees for outstanding leadership. The award criteria was carefully crafted by those who worked closely with Mando to represent the values and commitment he demonstrated in his years with USAA. It is expected that the recipients demonstrate all of them.

Mando's wife Debbie says the family was touched by the creation of the award in Mando's name.

“When Andrew, Anissa and I heard of the award honoring Mando, we all cried tears of joy," she says. “Mando loved working at USAA. He loved his coworkers, he loved the challenges the day brought and reveled in everyone's accomplishments. He would be so proud to happy to know that USAA will keep his memory alive."
