Hail destroyed my roof. I got a claim approved and a check in the mail less deductible and pro-rated amount. The roofers are telling me that the insurance company will only release the pro-rated amount if the roofer/contractor shows they spent that much on repairs. Rule #1 never trust a roofer! Anyone experience this? USAA rep on the phone told me in a round about way that I would get the remainder of the claim once the repairs are done. I did not ask the question correctly because I assumed... And the saying goes!

I would prefer to not hire a contractor, but rather take bids and deal with the insurance directly, is this a bad move?
