Don’t let fraudsters in the door after storm damage - USAA Member Community

It’s springtime and that means it’s also storm season.

Here in Texas, thousands of cars, homes and businesses were damaged by recent hailstorms.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) released a public service announcement warning that “there are some people who are eager to take advantage of victims by promising to do repair work with their sights set on getting your insurance repair money – leaving you even worse off.”

The NICB urges policy owners to work with their insurance companies for prompt claims handling of your covered losses and to also “beware of unsolicited contractors pressuring you to sign a contract or pay in advance. Remember: If you didn’t request it, reject it.”

When nature strikes next, here are five tips on how to get help with storm-related insurance claims from USAA along with a detailed FAQ and more information about insurance fraud.

If you suspect insurance fraud, notify the police or call USAA at 210-531-USAA (8722) or 800-531-USAA. You can also report fraud to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB):

• Online at NICB.org
• By calling 800-TEL-NICB (800-835-6422)
• By texting the keyword "FRAUD" to TIP411 (847411).
