On June 14, 1889, George Balch, a kindergarten teacher in New York City, planned the first Flag Day. On June 14, 1891, the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia held a Flag Day celebration, and on June 14 of the following year, the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution, celebrated Flag Day. Inspired by these three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 - was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916.

While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

The USAA Real Estate Rewards Network (RERN), a program that has helped USAA members buy or sell homes for over 27 years, provides an American Flag to those that purchase a home to display at their house after closing.  This is a great way to say Thank You for their service to our country, using the program and welcome home.

One member commented on receiving the flag:

USAA Community RERN Flag.pngWhat a great and unexpected house warming gift! I just about broke out in tears when I opened the box and found this. Thanks, USAA. As a military family, I know the joy, the privilege, and some of the pain of serving in this great country's protective forces. I can't say I was much of a patriot when I joined up. I just thought military bases and the community was cool and I wanted to be part of it. The flag represents so many things to me from singing day is done at scout camp to seeing a flag drape the coffin of my beloved dad. To seeing my son, present the colors at a football game, my daughter carries a flag on horseback, or teach my kid to salute the flag as it passes by in a parade, or watch my son come to attention and face the music at retreat serving the US in a foreign country. As divided as our country seems right now, this flag still represents the will, the hope, and even the struggle of a people brave enough to come together under its banner and do the best it can for its people to live Free from fear of oppression and Free in the pursuit of happiness.” – Kimberly USAA Member
