It's hot outside! As I write this, the temperature in Arizona is so high, I don't remember the last time I saw double-digits on my car's temperature gauge! Speaking of heat, there's a hot new career field you need to pay attention to. And, you can get trained absolutely for FREE! Are you ready?
The career field I'm talking about is something you've heard about over the past several years: Renewable Energy
The Renewable Energy industry includes contractors and raters who help make their customer's homes more comfortable, healthy, durable, and energy efficient through home performance contracting. You can take advantage of the training, incentives, financing, marketing and mentoring support through the Energy Upgrade California program. (Other States have similar programs too!) Those interested in the Renewable Energy industry start by getting trained and Building Performance Institute (BPI) certified.
I like the fact that the call these Green Collar Jobs! According to the BPI website, you can get certified in several areas related to Renewable Energy:
Building Analyst - go beyond a traditional energy audit to perform comprehensive, whole-home assessments, identify problems at the root cause and prescribe and prioritize solutions based on building science.
Envelope - quantify performance and prescribe improvements to help tighten the building envelope (shell), stop uncontrolled air leakage and optimize comfort, durability and HV/AC performance.
Residential Building Envelope Whole House Air Leakage Control Installer - implement measures to tighten the building envelope to reduce energy loss from air leakage and also reduce pollutants and allergens through air migration. Improve thermal comfort and energy efficiency through the proper installation of dense-pack insulation materials.
Manufactured Housing - apply house-as-a-system fundamentals to the specific needs particular to the various types of housing technologies.
Heating - optimize the performance of heating equipment to help save energy and ensure occupant comfort, health and safety.
Air Conditioning and Heat Pump - understand the role of these systems within the whole home and how to diagnose and correct problems properly to achieve peak performance.
Multifamily - apply building-as-a-system fundamentals to diagnose problems and improve the performance of larger, more complex residential structures.
BPI is quick to point out that you can choose to achieve one designation, or expand your skill set to encompass all of them.
To me, this is one hot career field! It doesn't matter what branch of service you're from. It doesn't matter what rank you had on your collar. All that matters is that you have a desire to learn a new industry, apply what you've learned, and get a piece of the renewable energy action.
I spoke to my Friend President and CEO of Clean Tech Energy Solutions, Inc. Claude Rowe III recently about this opportunity. He's a Certified Green Building Professional and son of Tuskegee Airman Claude Rowe, Jr.
"This is a chance for someone to hang their own shingle!" Rowe said.
OK, so maybe this career field doesn't interest you. Would you prefer to simply take advantage of some cost-saving tips & tricks to help keep more money in your pocket? You can attend a Home Energy Upgrades and Rebates for Military & Veteran seminar to learn more. Check out the calendar of renewable energy events here.
And, by now you thought I forgot to share the FREE Training available to Unemployed Veterans! According to the ONTILITY website, many unemployed Veterans will be able to attend these courses FREE of charge with available ONTILITY scholarships. ONTILITY Solar Training works with the local communities to respond to growing demand for trained solar workforce by offering Solar Workforce Assistance Grants to all US Military Veterans, and unemployed American workers including skilled construction workers such as roofing, electricians, HVAC techs, and others like construction company owners and recent college graduates looking for employment.
