I can't remember when it started but lately, when scanning a check in depoist@mobile the camera has been extremely frustrating. It used to find the check almost instantly but now there is a black bar masking half the screen and it appears as if it was designed to be used at an angle as I can only get the blue targeting box to come up if the phone is at approximately a 45 deg angle to the table/desk and even then it takes a bit of work to get it to scan. Is this working as designed? It's much much worse than it used to be.
I would make sure you have the latest updates on your USAA application as COScum suggested and if you are still experiencing the issue please give or website customer support a call at 1-877-632-3002 .
