I am looking for an online bank. I've been a USAA member for 25 years and wrote several letters of praise for the first 20 years. Things have changed in the last 4-5 years. Their service is just simply terrible now. Even their employees agree with me over the phone.
Has anyone who remembers when USAA was an amazing bank/insurance company found one currently with excellent service that you would recommend?

Take a look at Ally Bank or Capitol One Bank. I've been dealing with both of these for several years and have had no problems.
Pentagon Federal Credit Union gets good reviews from other USAA members.
Good luck.
I think the problems are systemic with United States banking right now for many reasons, USAA is IMHO one of the better companies to trade with, I've used the majority of the other national banks through the years and am using that as a yardstick for comparison. I mean this shut down thing put everyone at home working and cut off, wow what a mess glad we're all getting back to life on a positive norte and best of luck to us all.
I have been with USAA since 1974 when I applied for a credit card to buy my fiancee a ring. They gave me a card when others perhaps shied away; I am Viet Nam Army Veteran and was, back then, just a low rank company grade officer. USAA gave me a credit card, I bought a ring and the girl accepted...? 47 years later with two grown daughters ( one of which served in Army Spec5 as an Arabic linguist in the middle east ) the other a certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) and even though husband and Dad was an agressive/demanding Army Helicopter Gunship Pilot... I am proud! I got spit on twice while in uniform...Perhaps USAA has gotten spit on too...Sometimes I want to spit too... My Army daughter has provided a beautiful granddaughter and my PA-C has been at ground zero Seattle when covid hit...They are troopers for sure and also USAA members! If USAA has my back, then I also will support them; you don't ever let down your buddy and if your "buddy" should ever not care, well then...nothing is left.
Thank you so much for your service and your membership with us.
Why such a downturn in your rating of USAA?
Just read this forum and you'll see why.
Ally Bank. We moved the vast majority of our savings there about 18 months ago after realizing the corrosion happening at USAA (38 year member, sang its praises for 35 years). There isn't a lot of return on any savings accounts at the moment, but USAA 0.01% versus Ally 0.5% truly makes a huge difference- literally a 50 times better rate! After decades with USAA and no local bank we established a checking account at a local bank and really enjoy being able to call if we have a question and have the phone answered in 2 rings and receive correct and competent answers- no listening to a robot trying to get me to do anything but wait for a real person, only to find the real person has no idea what they're talking about 20 minutes later. The account is free, but no interest, so we're losing perhaps 20 cents a year!
GEICO has proved superior to USAA in price and flexibility. Good luck.
