TAKING A YEAR END LOSS IN A BOOMING STOCK MARKET

What a bitter pill to swallow particularly when you are 80 years old.  USAA put us in a "safe" investment--a diversified, conservative mutual fund.  The foreign securites went sour (perhaps they invested in the Russian Ruble).The bond portfolio was supposed to provide protection but obviously failed.  Needless to say, we are looking elsewhere for our investments.

USAA's financial reps are salaried so to place your money into stock and bond funds was not to generate a commission for themselves but I have to wonder why they would place an eighty-year-old's funds into such risk. Maybe they missed the basic rule of how to serve an elderly person's assets and that is to maintain principal.
