The National Guard is an amazing organization with an incredible range of responsibilities. The National Guard fights in the nation’s wars, it fights fires and floods then assists with clean up, it is manned by part and full-time personnel, and it serves in both domestic and international missions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year.
Here are just a handful of the wide range of missions that the National Guard performed since its last birthday. Oh, the National Guard traces its lineage to December 13, 1636 when some of the original colonies in North America organized their citizens for defense.
December 2017. N.M. National Guard bolstering communications in Puerto Rico. Soldiers from the New Mexico National Guard set up a VSAT, a very small aperture terminal satellite, in Vieques, Puerto Rico, to give other Guard members stationed there a better communication link between with Joint Task Force Puerto Rico headquarters in San Juan.
January 2018. N.Y. Guardsman died saving residents from huge Bronx fire. New York Army National Guard Pfc. Emmanuel Mensah, who died during a fire in an apartment building in the Bronx on Dec. 28, 2017. Mensah died while seeking to save other residents of his apartment building. Mensah is believed to have saved four people before he died in the fire, which killed 12 people.
February 2018. More than 400 Minn. Guard members supported Super Bowl LII. "This is what we do," said Maj. Gen. Jon Jensen, adjutant general of the Minnesota National Guard. "When the local community can't meet the public safety needs, they come to the Guard. We're their normal partner, we're a natural partner, and we're their preferred partner when it comes to filling in the gaps that they can't fill."
March 2018. S.C. and Ill. Guard members join with Air Force on rescues. It's dark. The air is heavy, filled with Afghanistan smoke and dust. On the flight line at Bagram Airfield, an Army CH-47F Chinook helicopter waits, beating thunder with its blades. An 83rd Expeditionary Rescue Squadron Guardian Angel team, which consists of pararescuemen and combat rescue officers, runs out and boards the helicopter.
April 2018. California Guard Soldiers get multinational experience in Sarajevo. California Guard officers and non-commissioned officers assigned to the 79th IBCT are stationed at Camp Butmir, providing such diverse functions as NATO Advisor for Training and Standardization, logistical coordination with EUFOR, postal operations, and administration for the headquarters.
May 2018. Air, Army Guard power on display during airdrop exercise. The central event of the Joint Force Exercise was to have multiple 182nd C-130 Hercules aircraft drop over 200 paratroopers onto a simulated contested airfield, secure and prepare it for landing. The 143rd is a National Guard infantry unit with airborne capability and added a unique element to the mission.
June 2018. Kansas Guard provides humanitarian support during Golden Coyote. Soldiers from the Kansas Army National Guard and Army Reserve units worked with Task Force 38, Canadian Army, to provide humanitarian support to Native American reservations throughout South Dakota during the Golden Coyote training exercise, June 12-18.
July 2018. N.Y. Army Guard aircrews assist in forest fire fighting. New York Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk aircrews from 3rd Battalion, 142nd Aviation, dropped more than 100,000 gallons of water on a 526-acre forest fire burning in Flatrock State Forest on July 13 and July 15.
August 2018. Idaho, Montana Soldiers practice live-fire with Thai troops. Idaho Army National Guard and Montana Army National Guard Soldiers from the 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team conducted a live-fire exercise with Royal Thai Army soldiers at the Cavalry Center in Thailand's Saraburi province Aug. 28, the final Hanuman Guardian 2018 training event for infantry Soldiers from both forces.
September 2018. Oklahoma Army National Guard water rescue team deploys to Florence. Seven Soldiers from Detachment 1, Charlie Company, 1-169th General Support Aviation Battalion, who trained in Helicopter Search And Rescue Team (HSART) operations, were placed on state active duty orders to assist in the recovery efforts after Hurricane Florence hits the East Coast.
October 2018. Texas National Guard helps first responders after flooding. Texas National Guardsmen support vehicles approach a flooded roadway near Huntsville, Texas, Oct. 18, 2018. Texas Guardsmen worked alongside emergency first responders to help Texans in need during severe flooding.
November 2018. Air National Guard members from the 195th Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Group have been providing aerial imagery support to agencies battling fires in the California since Nov. 8, 2018.
This year remember the National Guard in Afghanistan, fighting a forest fire in the Western US, or cleaning up debris after a tornado. The Army National Guard and Air National Guard are citizens from your community doing everything they can to keep you safe.
