I was stranded today when my a wheel bearing on my front passenger side broke.  I was driving when I noticed smoke coming out of that side.  I pulled over to a parking lot and got out of the truck.  There was a small fire under the wheel where, apparently, oil had accumulated and caught fire from the friction.  Fortunately there were sandbags holding down a sign in the parking lot.  I dragged one over and ripped it open and threw sand on the fire which, thankfully, put it out before there was any further damage.  I then called the USAA roadside assistance for a tow.  They informed me I could not get a tow because there was a fire involved and I needed to file a claim.  Hard to file a claim while stranded in a parking lot.  The tire was canted sideways and no way the vehicle would move without a tow truck.  I explained to roadside assistance that the fire didn't do any damage and the problem was the wheel bearing.   I JUST NEEDED A TOW!   Nope, said they couldn't do it, needed to file a claim.  Frustrated  beyond belief, I hung up and called for my own tow.  When I finally got home, I called USAA to see about reimbursement for the tow.  Again, they said I needed to file a claim and since it was just a tow I might want to reconsider as it may raise my rates in the future.  Oh, I'll reconsider all right.  Reconsider my insurance.  I was thinking that could have been my wife stranded on the side of the road and left helpless.  No way!  Get a grip, USAA, these are military members you are, literally, leaving behind.

@buffalok, I am terribly sorry to hear about the fire in your vehicle and the concerns with attempting to get a tow truck to assist. I have located your information and I am escalating this to a specialist to look into further. Please allow 2-3 business days for them to review your situation and reach out to you.

Yeah, I'm waiting, like I waited in that parking lot.

You'll wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and then you'll forget about it out of sheer disgust!

You're absolutely right!  Still waiting...one fellow called me and said he was "looking into it," said he found the call and then...nothing.  Outta here, suggest you all do the same.

Even more irritating is watching those USAA Insurance commercials that make people believe that USAA has your back. 🙄 Sometimes, it makes me want to throw something at my TV. Then you hear about the World-class service they say they provide to their members. Does management even know what that means? Probably not. Just the usual buzzwords that businesses throw at people to make them feel a little better.
