I am interested in opening an account with USAA.

Will I be able to use non USAA ATM's & are there fees associated?

Does USAA operate like Credit Unions & allow banking transactions with non USAA facilities?

@Recon 00, Thank you for your interest in a USAA checking account. There are typically two kinds of fees when you use an ATM — the fee your bank charges you and the usage fee that the ATM's bank charges. We protect you from both.

With a USAA Classic Checking account, you get:

  • 10 free withdrawals every month from more than 60,000 USAA-preferred ATMs.
  • USAA reimburses up to $15 per statement cycle in other banks' ATM fees in the United States only. The refund is deposited monthly, right before your statement is sent.

If you prefer the USAA Cashback Rewards Checking account, you get 10 free withdrawals every month from more than 60,000 USAA-preferred ATMs. Subsequent withdrawals will be charged $2 each except when made at any USAA Bank-owned ATM. If you get cash from an out-of-network ATM, you may be charged a usage fee by the ATM provider.

At this time, banking transactions are not allowed at non-USAA facilities. USAA Federal Saving Bank is primarily an online bank. Online banking is easy. There's no driving around town or waiting in line - you manage your money on your own terms, when it's convenient for you. Our members access their accounts on the USAA website and the USAA Mobile App. They can deposit checks by taking a picture through the USAA Mobile App or they can use our free, postage-paid envelopes. Additionally, deposits can be made at select ATMs. You can find an ATM near you at http://usaa.com/ATM and on the USAA Mobile App under "ATM Locations". You can do just about anything else online, using the USAA Mobile App or by talking with a member service representative over the phone. You won't have to walk into a bank again!

You can learn more about USAA banking here: https://www.usaa.com/inet/wc/banking. ~DC

Hi - Is it a recent change that ATM refunds only occur for US-based banks? I absolutely got international ATM fees refunded back in January 2019....was this a recent change to be only US-based banks?

Thanks

Hello @JoshB3, in the past foreign ATM fees would be refunded if the ATM categorized this separately. Not all foreign ATM's did this. There have been changes to our rebate guidelines and now only ATM fees within the United States are refunded. -Colleen
